Building a Doujinshi Marketplace from Scratch

Back in 2013, getting doujinshi shipped internationally was a nightmare.

Language barriers. Payment restrictions. Stores that simply didn't accept foreign cards. The proxy services that existed were slow, expensive, or both.

I was a collector before I was a developer. And like most problems I've encountered since, the first instinct was: can I automate this?

The Real Constraint

The hardest part wasn't the code. It was learning that operational problems don't disappear when you deploy.

You still need to:

  • Handle customs delays
  • Explain to a customer in Germany why their package is stuck in transit
  • Manage currency exposure when the yen swings 8% in a month
  • Keep WooCommerce from breaking after an update

Every one of these taught me something no dashboard certification ever would.

What I'd Tell Myself in 2013

Start with the operations, not the features. The best code I ever wrote for Buy Doujinshi wasn't a new integration — it was the script that stopped me from manually copying tracking numbers for 40 orders every week.

Automation born from survival is the best kind.
